Costume and Props

Costume/Clothing

For my photo shoot, i will be using several models and i want my models to match the genre of my magazine as much as possible. The genre i am aiming to meet is Indie, therefore, i would like my models to appear as indie as possible. I also want to use models who are part of my target audience making the magazine cover look less fake and more like a genuine indie magazine. The clothing i would like my models to use will be from shops such as Topman, Burtons, officers Club etc.

will then have my models wearing clothes which are usually viewed as being fiarly indie style clothing, for example, skinny jeans, cardigans, ripped jeans, checkered shirts, hats etc.

This is a good example of some indie clothing. skinny jeans with a stylish, black belt also with a wrist accessory, usually a bracelet or a selection of several bracelets. The smart style shoes are also associated with being indie if they are not being used for formal events. Indie are also known for having rather abstract clothing or a pattern you would not expect. For example, the hoodies above.

This is the type of checkered shirt i'd liike my front cover modle to be wearing, it is a tight fitting, colourful indie styled checkered shirt. This would make my modle represent an indie artist but also maker them look smart, showing the audience the artist is a smart person and likes to look good, following my target audience. This will make my target audience (hopefully) see this type of clothing on the cover of the magazine and see it is a magazine which will appeal to them.

On the toher hand, i would the band i am featuring in the DPS to be wearing more causla indie clothing. For exmaple, skinny jeans with tears in them, hoodies or cardigans etc. This is because they are more laid back and mixed with the props, will be having fun and having a laugh. This will show the audience they are fun people to be around which will then lead to suggest that their music is also fun and worth checking out.

Props

I would not be using many props in my photot shot for the front cover, however i would like to use some and the props i would be using would be mainly instrumental things, such as an acoustic guitar, microphone etc.
This is because it further promotes the artist's talent and will appeal to a large audience. In particular, people who play or like listening to acoustic songs, would see this and it would appeal to them moreover anyone else. Acoustic guitar is usually soft and a 'Beautiful' piece of music so it would connote the artist as also being a soft easy person creating beautiful music.
For the other shoots, with the artists in the DPS and Contents page, i will be more keen to use props. For the DPS, i would to feature a band and i would like to give the members some sort of toy (possible a fairy wand or childish headbands) to make the band appear as fun people who are willing to have some fun.

Front Cover

Photography Test Shoot

This would be a great photo for the front page. There is plenty of room for all the front covers essentials, like the masthead in the top right corner, sell lines to the sides, main sell line and banners. The facial expressions of both the artists as well as the position they are in suggests they are very fun people to be with thus connoting that their music is also fun and up beat and fun to listen to in general. The two models in this photo have a general sound appearance in the style of an indie genre, making the magazine more suited for it's genre of indie. The long hair, skinny jeans and bright colors all fit into the style and appearance of a stereotypical indie. The shallow depth of field makes the two models stand out more, suggesting that the band stand out more in comparison to other bands and are easier to identify.
However, the facial expressions of the models are not verty good, they do not match that of  aprofessional magazine. There is too much going on in the background, if i were to cover it up, the image would then not look right and not very effective. I would have to get a better image for a front cover.

Photography Research

Audience Research

From 21st January 2011

Alternative press is a monthly magazine, offering it's audience information about bands and upcoming tours, as well as much more. Approximately 54% of readers are female and 46% are male so this could suggest that the magazine's target audience is of a mixed gender and not made for a specific gender.
The audience seems to be of a fairly young audience, with the average age as 19 and median age at 17.  Their target audience is aimed at serious fans of music, who are willing to take many collections and attend as many shows as possible. This is one feature that makes this magazine popular, it is aimed at serious fans and the content within is all for the serious fans. It also aims it's magazine at a middle-to-upper-middle class, people with a higher income, this is clearly evident with the median household income being $61,000

Their target audience is mainly focused at people living in suburban areas, in/close to the big cities. This could be because these people are closer to 'the action' and are more up to date in comparison to people living in mountainous/coastal areas. This also means the fan have better access to the high street and shops where they can send their money and things they want again, in comparison to people who basically live in the middle of nowhere. This is a great idea as it means the magazine is reaching out to a large audience living in large areas, the readers spend their money on expensive clothing and music merchandise, so when they see merchandise in the magazine, they are more likely to buy it. These people most likely have a better education and attend a private school.

The magazine is aimed at a social class A on the socio-economic scale. People with an occupation of a professional level, administrative or higher managerial. Jobs such as, Bank branch manager or higher, Established Doctor and several others like so.

NME is a Weekely music feature magazine, supplying it's audience with updates on many popular, indie artists, information about bands and upcoming tours as well as exclusive interviews, competitions and subscription offers.

NMe has a similar target audience as AP magazine, however there are a few differences. NME is aimed at a higher age, with the average age being 24. Also, 69% of readers are male and only 31% are female.
Further more, most items displayed a long the top or more commonly associated as being 'Male' things. For example: video games,  K.Swiss, Beer, shockwaves hair product. This shows that NME is aimed at a more mature, male audience, 59% working full time and 29% still studying.
On the other hand, they both aim for a target audience who care a lot about their appearance. In particualr, 71% of NME readers agreed that it is important for them to look well dressed yet only 45% agreed that they spend a lot of money on clothing. This could mean that NME's audience are good with money and know where to get the best buys. Or it could be a case of their readers being part of a higher social class meaning
their opinion on what 'alot of money' is being a lot higher in comparison to a working class's idea of a lot of money.
